Why we made this one
Ask a four-year-old and they will tell you the party is what makes them older. Some are sure that two parties would make them two years older, and that skipping one would keep them small. Older and bigger are the same word at this age, which is why this story puts its proof on the door frame rather than on the cake. Back against the wood, heels in, chin up, and a new line a finger above last year's.
So there is no party in it. No guest list, no pile of presents, no numeral anywhere but the candles. The day is the spine: waking, the number tried on, the ordinary middle, the lights going low, one breath, the first slice, and the number said once more at bedtime.
The wish goes in and stays in. Nobody asks what it was, because holding a thought inside is one of the first private things a child owns.

- No. The research is clear that scale is what overwhelms young children at birthdays, and that many of them believe the party is what makes them older. So this is the day itself at household scale: waking, the door frame, an ordinary middle, the cake, the first slice, bedtime.
- How does the age work?
- You tell us how old your child is turning when you order. The narrator says the number twice, the cake carries exactly that many candles, and the door frame shows one new line above the old ones.
- Can we order it every year?
