Why we made this one
A child who screams through a haircut is not being difficult. Occupational therapists list what is actually happening: unpredictable light touch from behind, a high buzz beside the ear, a cold spray on a scalp that expected nothing, and clippings that feel like insects down the collar. None of that is defiance. All of it is information arriving too fast.
So this story slows it down and, above all, tells your child where the end is. Children tolerate hard things far better when they can count the steps, so the steps get counted at breakfast and then followed exactly. The buzz is met on the barber's own palm before it comes near an ear. The first snip is followed by a hand going up to check the ear is still there, and everybody waits until the checking is done.
There is no transformation in it. The mirror at the end shows the same child, slightly shorter round the ears, and one curl goes into an envelope because somebody thought to ask before the first snip.
