Why we made this one
Ask a swim teacher what children are actually frightened of and almost none of them say drowning. They say the echo, the smell, the cold, and above all putting their face in. So this story treats the face as the real work and gives it a ladder: chin on the water, then mouth under, then blow, then one whole second all the way in, and a blink rather than a rub when they come up.
The teacher in it does the things good teachers do. He crouches down to say hello with nothing in his hands. He blows bubbles into a cup on the dry deck before anybody is wet. He runs the count to three and goes on three, every time, so nothing is ever a trick. And when your child says wait, everything stops.
The grown-up sits on the bench and stays there, which surprises parents and is the thing instructors ask for most. A child who cannot reach you often does more, and every time they look over there is a wave waiting.
