Why we made this one
At three and four, a mask is not a joke. A face that changes breaks the rule a small child has just worked out, that people look like themselves, and the fear that follows is the ordinary kind that fades on its own. So this story does not talk anybody out of it. The grown-up crouches down, asks whether the feeling is this big or THIS big, says the house can be skipped, and then the mask comes off and it is a kid from down the street.
It gives a family the words for the night. A practice knock at your own door. Porch lights as a map, lit means yes. A held-out bucket counts as asking, because at the first door the words often will not come. The candy poured out on the rug and sorted into piles, with whatever you agreed already agreed.
Watch it a few nights before, when the costume is still new and the street is still an idea.

- That is what the story is about. A porch in it is too spooky, the child stops, a grown-up crouches down and asks whether the feeling is this big or this big, and then says they can skip any house they like. They do skip it, and nobody minds. Children this age are afraid of masks because a changing face breaks a rule they have only just learned, and the fear passes on its own.
