Why we made this one
A two-year-old is not being rude when they shout indoors. They have just discovered what a voice can do, and their volume runs on the same dial as their excitement, with nothing yet in between. They also cannot hear themselves as loud, which is why asking them to be quiet, in a voice that is getting louder, so reliably goes nowhere.
This story does the thing that works instead. The grown-up drops to a whisper, which pulls the child in rather than pushing back, and then makes an offer rather than a rule: let us see how loud we can be outside. Boots, door, garden, and the biggest roar the child owns, sent up into a wet sky with room for it.
Then the part nobody expects. The loud runs out on its own, not because anyone said so, and a little tiger voice gets tried on at dinner and turns out to fit. The family words in it, big voice and little voice, are easy to keep using on Monday.
