Why we made this one

A preschooler's real question about moving is not sentimental, it is practical, and it is about ownership. They frequently do not understand that the furniture is coming, or that their toys are coming, and a toy inside a taped box has, to them, simply gone. That is why every reassurance in this film is an image rather than a sentence.

So the child packs one box themselves, decides each thing that goes in it, and keeps it on their own lap in the car. And when they ask whether the bed comes, nobody says yes. They go outside and watch the bed go up the ramp into the truck, because at this age that is the only kind of answer that lands.

At the far end the bedroom goes up first and goes up the same. The advice everywhere else is to surprise them with an exciting new room, and the research says the opposite: sameness is what settles a small child, and novelty is what unsettles them.

It is honest about the ending too. The film finishes on a first morning, not on a settled life.
