Why we made this one
Sleep researchers have a name for the first night anywhere new: one half of the brain stays on watch, and it is gone by the second night. That is the whole story in one fact. Your child is not being difficult at lights out. They are listening to a house that makes the wrong noises.
So the film gives them the two things that actually help. The routine travels, even when the rooms do not, a bath with a different plug and teeth at a sink that is far too high and the same book in a different voice. And somebody sits on the edge of the bed, does not argue with the feeling, names one of the sounds so the dark becomes ordinary, and says the words you always say.
It is a night at a relative's house, because that is where a first night belongs at this age. Nobody in it calls this practice for a friend's house later, and nobody treats an early pickup as a failure.

- Whose house is the story set at?
- Whoever you choose, and you name them. Most first nights happen at a grandparent's, an aunt's or an uncle's, which is what the story is built for, and it works for a close family friend too.
- Does it pretend the first night is easy?
- No. The wobble is in it, right where it really happens, at lights out. What the story shows is somebody sitting on the edge of the bed and not arguing with it, which is what actually settles a child.
- Our child has two homes already. Does this still fit?
